Cymbidium - Swartz


An Indo-Malesian genus of 44 species of both terrestrial and epiphytic orchids, Cymbidium is represented in India by 24 species .two species and one subspecies are found in Kerala .

Rheede's drawing of Kanisjiram Maravara (hort. Malab. 12 : t.8. 1693) is considered the type of this species .

Occurrence : Trivandrum ,Quilon , Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Palghat , Kannur and Kasaragod Districts.

Distribution : Indo-Malesia .

A very much-confused species, Cymbidium bicolor as per protologue is small flowered .

Occurrence : Wayanad District.

Distribution : India , Sri Lanka to Java.

Saldanha , who found it in Hassan District , karnataka , first reported this from Southern India . Henry & swaminathan recorded it from Tamil Nadu. We found it in Kerala . This is a pretty orchid with very fragrant flowers .

Occurrence : Trivandrum and Palghat Districts .

Distribution : Extends from Southern India (Karnataka , Kerala and Tamil Nadu), sri Lanka to Thailand .
