Oberonia - Lindley


An Old World genus of about 300-350 species of epiphytic orchids, Oberonia is represented by 53 species . Twenty four species are found in Kerala .

1.Oberonia agastyamalayana Sathish in Sathish Kumar & Manilal , Cat. Ind. Orch. 57. 1994.

Oberonia longifolia Muktesh & Stephen , J. Orchid Soc. India 12(1-2) : 29 . 1998. syn. nov.

Type : Silent Valley , Palghat District.

Oberonia longifolia Muketesh & Stephen described recently from silent Valley is not different from Oberonia agastyamalayana Sathish and hence is reduced to a synonym .

Occurrence : Trivandrum , Palghat Districts.

Distribution : Local Endemic (Kerala).

2. Oberonia anamalayana Joseph, J. Ind. Bot. Soc. 42(2) : 222. 1963 ; Abraham & Vatsala 1981: 425.

Described by Joseph based on his collection from Anamalais, Oberonia anamalayana is distinctive species characterized by the dirty brown , loosely arranged flowers on a long inflorescence and with erect , conical lip .

Occurrence : Kottayam , Idukki Districts.

Distribution : Regional endemic (kerala , Tamil Nadu ).

3. Oberonia bicornis Lindl. , Gen .Sp. Orch. 16. 1830 ; J.D. Hook . 1890: 682 ; Santapau & Kapadia 1966: 73 ; Seidenfaden 1968 : 85 ; Manilal & Sathish Kumar 1983: 987.

Described by Lindley based on a Wallich collection made from Sylhet in Bangladesh.

Occurrence : Palghat District.

Distribution : India and Bangladesh .

4. Oberonia brachyphylla Blatt . & Mc Cann, J. Bombay Nat.Hist. Soc. 35: 252. 1931; Santapau & Kapadia 1966: 57; Seidenfaden 1968 : 91 ; Saldanha in Saldanha & Nicolson 1976 : 838; Joseph & Vajravelu 1979: 169 ; Abraham & Vatsala 1981 : 416.

Described by Blatter & Mc Cann based on an illustration by T.R. Bell and Miss Bell. Since no type was cited at the time of publication , Santapau & Kapadia (1966) designated Kapadia 2855(BLAT) as a neotype.

Distribution : Regional Endemic (Karnataka , goa and kerala).

Described by Wight based on a collection from Iyamalai Hills , coimbatore . It was named in honour of the then President of the Linnean Society .

Occurrence : Idukki , Thrissur and Palghat Districts .

Distribution : Regional Endemic (Maharashtra, Karnataka , Goa , Kerala , Tamil Nadu).

6. Oberonia chandrasekharanii V.J. Nair, V.s. Ramachandran & R. Ansari, Blumea 28: 361 . 1983. Oberonia rangannaiana Murthy & Yoganara ., Curr. Sci. 56 (12) : 621. 1987.

This is a very distinctive species described from kerala -the hairy lip is very characteristic .

Occurrence : Idukki , Palghat, Wayanad and Kannur Districts.

Distribution : Regional endemic (Karnataka , Kerala , Tamil Nadu)

7. Oberonia ferruginea Parish ex J.D Hook ., Fl. Brit. Ind. 5 : 679. 1888; Seidenfaden 1968: 55.

Oberonia ensiformis auct . non (J.E. Sm . ) Lindl.: Saldanha in Saldanha & Nicolson 1976: 838; Abraham & Vatsala 1981: 419.

This species is related to Oberonia ensiformis (J.E. Sm) Lindl., but distinct in having an entirely different lip without any callus.

Occurrence : Trivandrum , Idukki , Palghat and Wayanad Districts .

8. Oberonia gammiei King & Pantl. , J. As. Soc. Bengal 66(3) : 578. 1897: Seidenfaden 1968: 45 & 1978: 19.

This species closely allied to the widespread Oberonia mucronata (D. Don) Ormerod & Seidenf. from which it can be distinguished by its much fewer flowered raceme , more distinctly 3-lobed and concave lip with serrate sidelobes and subquadrate midlobe having almost entire edges . King & Pantling cited two collections in protologue , one from Sunderbans in Lower Bengal By G.A. Gammie & R.L. Heining (No. 92 CAL!) and the other from rangamatia in the Chittagong Hill Tracts by Gamble (6833) CAL!)We have similar collections from kerala .

Occurrence : Trivandrum and Malappuram Districts.

Distribution : India to Burma , Thailand , Laos and Vietnam .

9. Oberonia josephii Saldandha , Ind. For. 100: 568. F.G. 2. 1974; Saldanha in Saldanha & Nicolson 1976: 840 ; Muktesh Kumar & Stephen Sequiera 1999: 173.

Originally described from Hassan Districts, Karnataka , this species was recently recorded from the State.

Occurrence :Wayanad District.

Distribution : Regional Endemic (Karnataka (type ) and Kerala) .

10. Oberonia longibracteata Lindl. , gen sp. Orch. 1830 ; J.D. Hook . 1890 : 678; Seidenfaden 1968: 83 & 1973: 39; Jayaweera in Dassanayake & Fosberg 1981 : 16 ; Nair , Mohanan & Ansari 1982 : 623.

This species was originally described from Sri Lanka . Lindley Compared this species with Oberonia iridifolia (=Oberonia. mucronata) to which it is not really very much related. very long floral bract is very characteristic .

Occurrence :Idukki District.

Oberonia denticulata Wight , Ic. Pl. Ind. Or. 5 (1): 3 .t. 1625. 1851; Panigrahy & Dubey 1983 : 2.

This was long known under the name Oberonia iridifolia Roxb. ex. Lindl. Ormerod & Seidenfaden found the correct name to be Oberonia mucronata based on the older Stelis mucronata D. Don from Nepal.

Distribution : Widespread across Indo-Malesia .

This species related to Oberonia santapaui and Oberonia forcipata but different in having entire serrate bracts, oblanceolate or oblong petals and ear-like sidelobes of lip.

Described by King & Pantl. after Proudlock's collection from near Gudalur in Nilgiris, this species is related to Oberonia pachyrachis Rchb.f. , V orbicularis J. D. Hook . and Oberonia pachyphylla King & Pantl. but distinct by its reflexed sepals and a differently shaped lip.

Occurrence : Idukki district.

This species was described by Sivadasan and Balakrishnan based on a collection from Wayanad. This is related to Oberonia acaulis Griff. and Oberonia verticillata Wight and to some extent Oberonia sebastiana Shetty & Vivek ., but the lip shape is quite unique . Oberonia pakshipadalensis Muketesh & Stephen , later described from Wayanad is in no way different from Oberonia wynadensis , hence it is reduced to a synonym.

Distribution : Local Endemic (Kerala ).

24 . Oberonia sp. nov. ?

Originally brought from Munnar by Saleem (M. Saleem 32251 TBGT!) this has flowered recently under cultivation proving to be an yet undescribed species having unquely unlobed lip .A detailed description is under preparation .

Occurrence : Idukki District.
