Vanilla - Plumier ex Miller
A tropical genus of about 65 species , Vanilla is represented in India by five species . Two species are found in Kerala .

This was described by Wight based on a drawing by Mrs . Walker from Ceylon . Rao & Sudhakar's (1986) record of Vanilla wightiana from Eastern Ghats is erronous . Their plant belongs here.
Occurrence : Quilon and kannur Districts.
Districts : Southern India (Kerala , Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh) and Sri Lanka (type).

Wight who first collected this species mistook it for Vanilla aphylla Bl. Lindley noted the novelty of Wight's specimen but was actually published by Hooker .
Occurrence : Trivandrum , Pathanamthitta and Thrissur Districts.
Distribution : Regional Endemic (Kerala , Tamil Nadu).
